Distressing images of the tragic death of Baby Samuel show why the Queensland Parliament must be allowed to debate the state’s abortion laws.
A whistleblower has alleged that Baby Samuel was born alive at 16 weeks’ gestation in a Queensland hospital following an abortion procedure and was left to die. The baby reportedly showed signs of life, including sucking his thumb.
This is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing. If a baby is born alive, that child deserves care.
These allegations raise serious questions about how Queensland’s abortion laws are working in practice. However, Parliament has been blocked from even discussing those laws.
On 10 December 2024, Premier David Crisafulli introduced a motion banning any debate, bill, or motion related to the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018. The Speaker must shut down any attempt to raise the issue.
This is an unprecedented gag order. Parliament exists to discuss and debate laws — especially laws that involve life and death. When something this serious happens, Parliament should be asking questions, not being told to stay silent.
We will continue to call on all MPs to support the removal of the gag order and restore open debate in Queensland’s Parliament.
