NYC Far-Left Candidate Denounces Veterans Day, Fourth of July For ‘Silencing Immigrants’

admin January 5, 2026

A Democratic Socialist candidate in NYC frowned upon American holidays like Thanksgiving and Veteran’s Day, claiming those celebrations represent the silencing of immigrant communities — according to recently resurfaced commentary.

“‘Whether it is July 4th, Thanksgiving, Veterans, Columbus or now Labor Day, we enjoy days off that are supposed to be victories for people, when they truly represent the silencing & destruction of our movements,’ Aber Kawas, a longtime Palestinian-American activist, wrote in an online journal posted on Sept. 7, 2015 — Labor Day.”

“Today I do not celebrate a day off, I only recommit myself to a global movement that fights against the death, displacement, and exploitation of people for capital,” she added.

Kawas, endorsed by Zohran Mamdani, is running for the 34th District Assembly seat representing parts of Queens.

Republican NYC Councilwoman Joann Ariola said Kawas has “obviously been radicalized, and she has no place being in a New York state assembly or in government.”

“People who want to run for office take an oath for that office, and that is to uphold the Constitution of the United States, the state of New York, and uphold our values. You’re running for office to make this world better,” Ariola told The Todd Starnes Show on Newsmax.

“Why are you coming into office and wanting to cancel what is the very fiber of America … why is this part of your platform?”

“If you’re going to be a representative of this country, then you represent it as it is,” Ariola told Starnes. “There should be a ticket issued to her, on Delta, back to wherever she wants to go.”
