Israel Set to Deploy Arrow 4 Missile Defense System in Major Upgrade to Air Shield

admin February 19, 2026

Israel is expected to begin operational deployment of the Arrow 4 missile defense system in the coming months, marking a significant upgrade to the nation’s multi-layered air defense network, according to Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) President and CEO Boaz Levy.

Speaking Tuesday at the Defense Tech conference at Expo Tel Aviv, Levy said the next-generation interceptor will enhance Israel’s ability to counter evolving aerial threats, particularly ballistic missiles launched by Iran and its regional proxies.

“The entry of the Arrow 4 system into operational service will increase Israel’s interception success,” Levy said. “When we develop a new system, we focus on solutions for future threats, not current threats. This is how we stay ahead of the ever-evolving threats.”

Replacing Arrow 2, Complementing Arrow 3

The Arrow missile defense array is a central pillar of Israel’s layered air shield. Arrow 4 is designed to replace the aging Arrow 2 interceptor — first deployed in 1998 — for within-atmosphere interceptions, while complementing the more advanced Arrow 3, which operates outside the Earth’s atmosphere at very high altitudes.

IAI first announced development of Arrow 4 in 2021. Once fully operational, Arrow 4 and Arrow 3 together are expected to provide enhanced interception capabilities against long-range ballistic missile threats.

Currently, the Israeli Air Force operates both Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems, with Arrow 3 declared operational in 2017.

Lessons From Confrontations With Iran

Israel’s Arrow systems have already been battle-tested during multiple rounds of confrontation with Iran. Tehran has launched ballistic missiles at Israel from distances exceeding 1,500 kilometers (932 miles), underscoring the strategic importance of long-range interception capabilities.

Levy emphasized that Israeli defense innovation is driven by necessity.

“We are not doing this because we want to, but because we have no other choice,” he said. “The Israeli public should know that the Defense Ministry, the military and the defense industries are working together to provide the best possible solutions for protecting Israel.”

Focus on Future Threats and Emerging Technologies

Looking ahead, Levy noted that Israel’s defense sector is increasingly integrating autonomous systems and artificial intelligence into its platforms to stay ahead of emerging threats. He also hinted that new capabilities are continually being developed, suggesting that future confrontations could include unexpected technological advancements.

As regional tensions remain high, the operational rollout of Arrow 4 represents not only a technological milestone but a strategic signal: Israel intends to maintain qualitative military superiority and strengthen its defensive posture against ballistic missile threats.
